And what’s the problem with healers having a health condition??
How does having a health condition preclude you from doing healing work that you’re qualified to do? (apart from symptoms being too overbearing to concentrate or hold space for others).
But I get it – and I’ve felt the same. The shame of not having your own stuff sorted and feeling like a hypocrite. There’s a personal value to be the best person and role model you can be.
But being a role model does NOT equal being absolutely perfect.
And that leads me on to some mistaken thought patterns, which holds the shame in place.
MISTAKEN THOUGHT 1 – you believe there’s a thing called perfect health & that you should be that
Well, you might as well aim to be a unicorn.
Perfect health is near impossible to achieve, when you think about the environment we live in and then also the complex & intricate workings of the body (where anything could go wrong). Partner that with our society’s still very backward views on health – and the thought of being perfect in your health is like living in a fantasy world.
Ask yourself whether you’re trying to meet a standard that is near impossible and even unfair to place that type of expectation on yourself.
What we’re really ashamed about are symptoms. But that isn’t health. It might indicate health is going astray, but it’s not health.
This doesn’t mean that you don’t do what you can, with your current capacity to improve your health. At this point in time, until you know better, if you are doing your best – then that is enough for now.
Your clients are likely many steps behind you in understanding their health and what to do. Do they need to wait until you have EVERYTHING sorted, before they can see you?
MISTAKEN THOUGHT 2 – You tend to see only your faults (& very little of your achievements)
Most likely you have a tendency to see your faults, and use that to better yourself. But how much do you celebrate your achievements too?
It’s time for developing a more balanced outlook about yourself.
There are benefits in seeing the negatives – these people tend to be more risk adverse, because they can see the trajectory of where things can go wrong. There are roles that need this, including the role of healers. You can see that these actions will lead you down this unhealthy path, etc.
But it’s also not very inspiring.
Really ask yourself – are you using this fault-finding to actually better yourself? Or is it actually designed to keep you small & ‘in your place’?
Instead of using this skill for fault finding, use it to see the TRUTH.
Have a look back through your life – back 5 years, then 10 years, then 15 years.
How much have you improved since then? What skills have you acquired? How much more knowledge and understanding? What do you do better?
Spend time to give yourself a more balanced view about yourself.
Now, it’s not all doom & gloom! There are opportunities in this as well – even if not obvious. Here’s some positives to balance out those negatives.
OPPORTUNITY 1 – You understand the level of helplessness from your client’s point of view
You’ve been there, and you know how powerless it is to have an ongoing health condition.
You ALSO probably know that it isn’t at all helpful when someone says to just ‘stop resisting’… or ‘just do what I say <insert whatever instruction> & it’ll all be better’. You probably have stopped saying that yourself, since you’re not that naïve anymore.
New healers and healers who haven’t fought through chronic health conditions don’t know that. They still believe in the ‘silver bullet’ and the product/modality that will solve all.
And you also have compassion.
Yes, perhaps the client may be resisting their healing, but it’s also very likely they’re NOT resisting on purpose. Or even consciously.
You’ve come to understand that your job as a healer is to support them through that… not blame them. Because you know from your own resistances and struggles.
OPPORTUNITY 2 – You understand that there’s a lot more to healing than just ‘using that one process/modality’
Most likely you’re already trained in a modality and are dedicated to enhancing your healing capacity.
And from your own experience, you’ve realised that not all health conditions are created equal.
When you think about it, some of your symptoms & issues didn’t take long – while your more chronic health condition/s probably have taken longer to shift (& not fully resolved).
And those that have taken longer have required more than one modality or session.
With this wisdom & understanding, you can support your clients better through their healing. Helping them understand that healing is not all about instant fixes and magic processes – but requires a combination of different healing support, as well as building consistent health habits.
Just like you’ve had to do with your own case.
A New Plan of Attack
Truthfully, if you do have health issues and are working in the health industry… then you’re not going to feel like a very good role model.
You’ve probably already been trying a variety of things. And where you’re stuck is to know what else to do and where to place your energies most effectively.
Apart from actually seeing healers/health coaches to gain that outside perspective and advice, here’s a little process that I’ve come up with after experiencing a pretty cool Voice Dialogue session the other week.
Remember to try it from an energy of play!
Here’s the process:
- Sit in a seat in the middle of your room
- Feel into your energy field, where your ‘physical body’ consciousness sits at this point in time
- When you’ve located it – go to that spot in the room (as representative as you can, if you happen to have a weird one, like above you, or out of the room)
- From its position & perspective, as your physical body, answer this question –
- “what do you want/need right now?” and answer as the physical
- You can also ask – “What do you want to tell <your name> right now?” and answer as the physical
- When done return to your chair
- Next, feel into your energy field where your ‘energetic body’ consciousness sits at this point in time. Repeat above steps.
- Repeat again for ‘emotional body’ consciousness and ‘mental body’ (mind) consciousness.
- Return to your chair – and commit to carrying out those actions in the next 2 days
After this exercise, you should have a couple of actions to take for the physical, energetic, emotional and mental aspects of yourself.
For example, I was given the following requests:
- PHYSICAL – have a day-off rest, because the mind has been taking up too much energy
- ENERGETIC – continue with the ASEA product, and start looking at supplements such as magnesium. Water is needed to help energy processes in the body
- EMOTIONAL – dance and dedicated play with movement with each of the 5 key emotions
- MENTAL – needs a rest, been taking up too much. Wants a kinesiology session to help with brain integration with a recent project.
I also noticed how each aspect was perfectly in each corner surrounding me – the physical & emotional in the front, with the energetic and mental in the back.
I took this to mean that at this point in time, I am given each part importance in balance with each other, and keeping them close to me. Although, the mind is still being overused.
Try out the process if you are stuck with what health actions that your body(ies) require from you at this point in time. To go more in depth, you mind want to try an Intuitive Health Planning session, to get more clarity of what type of actions would support you better over the next 6 months.
As long as you are doing your best to widen your understanding of health, and doing the best you can to support yourself with the cards that you’ve been dealt --- then you are possibly the best choice of healer that your clients need at this point in their health journey.
Remember, your role is here to help others. So, allow others to help you as well.
And most of all, remember that most of us don’t know what we’re doing with health. Society sure doesn’t – that’s why we’re in the mess that we’re in as a collective. Your input and your experience is valuable – whether it’s perfect or not.
We, as a society, need as many healers as we can get.
