I used to love reading mystery novels like Encyclopaedia Brown & You Be The Jury when I was a child. When it came to working out Who Dunnit... Well... I sucked. For some reason, I was always dead wrong – distracted by some red herring thrown in by the author.
If you’ve never had a particular passion towards mystery novels, you might not be familiar with the term red herring. It is something, usually a clue in mystery novels, which leads readers or the characters in the story towards a false conclusion. This naturally throws us off-track, wasting a lot of precious time and energy thinking we’re on the right path – and far away from solving the mystery or coming to a conclusion of truth.
Life is often full of red herrings.
